Things to do in Mazatlán - Visit Observatorio 1873

Updated: Jun 12, 2022

Cost: $$

Time: 2-3 hours

Open 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Tuesday to Sunday. Closed Monday

Perched 75 meters above sea level on Cerro del Vigía sits a historic site first used to watch for approaching ships signaling below with colored flags and bell chimes, later added to function as a centre to create meteorological reports and in 1910 it was used as a seismological station. A cyclone in 1927 destroyed the buildings distinctive domes.

Today the site has been restored and boasts a beautiful tourist attraction including a ride up the hill in a unique rail car, a tour of the 19th century home, agave garden, Mezcal tasting bar and bird preservation area. The best part of the Observatorio is the stunning 360° views.
